The mathematics of Hermitian operators with binary spectra — specifically the commutation relation [σ, U] = 0 — is structurally isomorphic to the Reformed doctrine that moral orientation cannot be changed by self-generated effort. Define a Hermitian operator σ with eigenvalues ±1. The commutation relation states that unitary self-evolution U cannot change the eigenvalue of σ. The system may evolve, precess, rotate — but the sign stays fixed.

This is the mathematical content of sola gratia: salvation by works is impossible not as a cultural assertion but as a mathematical theorem. Self-generated evolution cannot flip a commuting eigenvalue. An external operator V with [σ, V] ≠ 0 is required. The theology names that operator "grace." The mathematics derives the requirement independently.

 Kill Condition

If sustained self-effort could permanently flip moral orientation without any external input — that is, if [σ, U] ≠ 0 were demonstrated in either domain — the isomorphism breaks. Any system where internal dynamics alone can cross the eigenvalue boundary falsifies the mapping. Note: behavioral improvement (Ψ rotating in Hilbert space) does not falsify it; only genuine eigenvalue flip by self-evolution would do so.

When σ and U commute, they share eigenstates. The eigenvalue of σ is therefore a conserved quantity under time evolution generated by H. Self-generated dynamics cannot change which eigenstate the system occupies — only which state within the eigenspace.

Moral orientation as binary eigenstate
None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. Romans 3:10–12 (ESV)

The theological claim is that moral orientation — the fundamental alignment of a person toward or away from God — is binary. There is no neutral state. Matthew 12:30 states this explicitly: "Whoever is not with me is against me." The moral spectrum consists of exactly two eigenvalues: +1 (righteous, aligned toward God) and −1 (fallen, aligned away from God).

The Key Theological Mapping

The commutation relation [σ, U] = 0 maps onto the theological claim that works-righteousness is structurally impossible — not merely difficult or improbable, but formally excluded by the mathematics of commuting operators. No behavioral program (U) generated by the fallen self (the system's own Hamiltonian) can alter the moral eigenvalue.

John 3:3 provides the theological counterpart to the external operator requirement: "Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." The new birth is an operation from outside the system — it does not commute with the moral orientation operator because it is not generated by the system's own Hamiltonian.

Connection to ISO-013

ISO-013 provides the explicit matrix form of V_grace (the idempotent projection G = [[1,1],[0,0]]) and proves the additional properties: G² = G (once is enough), G†G ≠ I (irreversible), rank-deficient (prior state erased). Swap Test — PASSED
Replace "eigenvalue" with "moral orientation" and "unitary evolution" with "works of the law" — the operator algebraic structure holds in both directions. The commutation relation maps cleanly onto the theological claim without distortion in either direction. The mathematical result (eigenvalue invariance under commuting operator) is exactly what the theology describes (works cannot change moral nature).
Bidirectional Prediction — PASSED
Forward: operator theory predicts that behavioral improvement (U acting on |−1⟩) should produce measurable changes in secondary observables without changing the fundamental orientation. This matches the theological observation that moral effort produces real behavioral change while leaving the underlying condition unchanged. Reverse: the theological claim of binary moral states predicts that the mathematical model should require a binary-spectrum operator, not a continuous one.
Non-Interchangeability — PASSED
The sign operator is not the same as the grace operator (ISO-013). The grace operator is not the same as moral orientation. Moral orientation is not the grace operator. All three roles are structurally distinct and non-interchangeable in both domains.
 Falsification Condition

If any sustained self-generated behavioral program (without external intervention) produced a permanent, stable flip of fundamental moral orientation — not behavioral change, but eigenvalue change — the isomorphism would be falsified. The test distinguishes behavioral improvement (which the model predicts and accommodates) from genuine regeneration (which the model says requires an external operator). A documented case of self-bootstrapped, permanent moral-nature transformation — sustained across time without a grace-analog — would be the kill condition.
