TESTS

Swap Test: Can you swap soul for another field?

Could you use any scalar field and call it "soul"? Yes — and that is precisely the problem. The Klein-Gordon equation describes many fields (pion field, Higgs field, inflaton). What distinguishes the soul field from any other scalar field is not the equation it obeys but the interpretation layered onto it. The equation itself does not know it is describing a soul.

Could you swap the properties? Partially:

  • If m_S >> 0 (massive), the field would decay exponentially (Compton wavelength = hbar/m_S c). This would mean souls are mortal — they dissipate over time. Setting m_S ~ 0 is precisely the choice that makes souls immortal. But this choice is made TO match the theology, not derived FROM the physics.
  • If g_sm were large (strong coupling), the soul would be easily detectable by standard particle physics. Setting g_sm ~ 10^(-18) makes it undetectable. This is convenient.

Swap test result: FAILED. The equation is generic; the specific parameter choices (m_S ~ 0, g_sm extremely small) appear selected to reproduce theological claims while remaining undetectable. This is the hallmark of an unfalsifiable construction.

Prediction in Domain A (Physics):

  • If the soul field exists with g_sm ~ 10^(-18), it would contribute to anomalous energy densities at cosmological scales. P10.1 claims this could show up in precision measurements of dark energy or dark matter.

  3. Demonstrate consciousness fully explained by neural computation with no residual. If the hard problem of consciousness is solved without any field beyond known physics, the soul field becomes unnecessary (Occam's razor).
  4. Show that personal identity does not survive bodily death. This is not experimentally testable by current means, making it a weak falsification criterion.

HONEST ASSESSMENT: THE MOST SPECULATIVE ISO

This ISO demands the harshest scrutiny in the entire registry. Here is why:

1. There is zero experimental evidence for a soul field. Not "weak evidence" or "indirect evidence" — zero. No experiment has ever detected anything that could be identified as Psi_S. The Higgs field was postulated in 1964 and detected in 2012 after fifty years of experimental effort. The soul field has no comparable detection pathway.

2. The coupling constant g_sm ~ 10^(-18) to 10^(-15) is suspiciously convenient. It is:

  • Weak enough to explain why we have never detected the soul field
  • Strong enough to claim the soul still "couples" to the body
  • Tuned to a window that is beyond current experimental reach but not obviously absurd

This is the structure of an unfalsifiable theory. A genuinely predictive coupling constant would either be detectable (and thus testable) or would have specific signatures in known physics (like the gravitino coupling in supersymmetry, which makes specific predictions for collider experiments even though the gravitino itself is not directly detected).

3. The Klein-Gordon equation is generic. Literally any spin-0 field obeys it. Calling a KG field "the soul" does not make it the soul. The equation carries no semantic content about souls, consciousness, identity, or moral agency. All of those properties are added by interpretation, not derived from the mathematics.

4. The mathematical model does not capture what makes souls theologically important. The soul in Christian theology is the locus of:

  • Moral agency (choosing good or evil)
  • Personal relationship with God
  • Bearing the image of God
  • Consciousness and subjective experience

A scalar field has none of these properties. It has an amplitude and a phase. It obeys a wave equation. It does not choose, relate, reflect, or experience. The mapping captures persistence and coupling but misses everything that makes a soul a soul.

5. What is genuinely interesting despite all this:

  • The decoupling model of death (g_sm -> 0 rather than Psi_S -> 0) is elegant and provides a formal distinction between death-as-destruction and death-as-separation. This distinction matters theologically and the mathematical formalism captures it cleanly.
  • The conservation law N_S = constant formally encodes the theological claim that souls are not destroyed, only created. This has structural content.
  • The masslessness-implies-immortality connection, while selected rather than derived, is mathematically valid: massless fields genuinely do not decay.

Honest verdict: This is mathematical theology, not physics. It uses QFT formalism to express theological claims, but it does not derive those claims from physics and it does not make experimentally accessible predictions. It should remain at Undetermined until either (a) a detection pathway is identified or (b) a prediction unique to Psi_S (not generic to any massless scalar) is made and tested.
