Societies with higher interpersonal trust (a plausible proxy for social coherence) consistently show better outcomes across health, economic, and institutional metrics. Trust erosion — social decoherence — correlates with institutional decay, increased crime, reduced economic activity, and deteriorating public health. The World Values Survey documents this across 90+ countries over four decades.

Honest Caveat

This evidence is suggestive, not conclusive. Trust is a proxy for coherence, not a direct measure. The correlation between trust-as-coherence and flourishing is real but the causal mechanism is not established. Alternative explanations (institutions, wealth, geography) are not ruled out. This evidence supports the isomorphism as a research direction — it does not confirm it.

For this isomorphism to reach Level 3, we would need: (1) a direct information-theoretic measure of coherence applied to human communities, (2) a demonstrated correlation between that measure and independent moral assessments, and (3) bidirectional predictive power — not just "virtue → coherence" but "coherence → virtue (or conditions for virtue)."

The mapping works in the primary direction: virtue → ΔC > 0, vice → ΔC < 0. However, sin can temporarily increase local coherence. A well-organized criminal syndicate has high internal coherence — it runs efficiently, commands loyalty, achieves its objectives. The mapping requires specifying scope: sin decreases global or long-term coherence even when it increases local or short-term coherence. This is a genuine strain point, not a fatal flaw, but it prevents a clean PASSED verdict.
Scope Constraint Required
The coherence metric must be evaluated at the appropriate scale: the global system (including all affected parties over the full time horizon), not local subsystems over short periods. This is not ad hoc — the natural law tradition has always insisted on the common good evaluated in its fullness. The constraint is internal to the mapping, not imported to save it.
Conscience as Gradient Detector — Supported
The claim that conscience detects local coherence gradient (rather than calculating global consequences) explains both its strengths and its limitations. Conscience is fast and local — it gives immediate directional readings. It fails when local and global gradients diverge (as in the criminal syndicate case). This matches empirical psychology: conscience is an affective signal, not a deliberative faculty. The isomorphism explains the architecture of conscience without requiring full consequentialist calculation.
 Falsification Condition

If moral improvement showed no correlation with measurable coherence metrics at any scale — that is, if virtuous societies were no more coherent (by any information-theoretic measure) than vicious ones — the mapping breaks. Specifically: if high-trust, low-corruption societies (virtue proxies) showed the same entropy distribution as low-trust, high-corruption societies (vice proxies), the coherence-virtue correspondence fails.

A stronger falsification: if a community pursuing virtue consistently became less coherent by information-theoretic measures, while a community pursuing vice became more coherent — with no scope adjustment possible — the mapping inverts and must be abandoned.
