The SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) model is the foundational mathematical framework for disease propagation through a population. Its elegance is in its simplicity: three states, three differential equations, one decisive number — R₀.
S = Susceptible (not yet infected), I = Infected (can transmit), R = Recovered (immune or removed). β = transmission rate (contacts × probability of transmission per contact). γ = recovery rate. The product βSI drives spread; γI drives resolution.
R₀ is the average number of secondary infections produced by one infected individual in a fully susceptible population. R₀ > 1: epidemic (exponential spread). R₀ < 1: disease dies out. R₀ = 1: endemic equilibrium. The threshold is the most consequential number in public health.
The fraction of a population that must be immune to prevent epidemic spread: p_c = 1 - 1/R₀. For R₀ = 10 (measles), 90% immunity is required. For R₀ = 2, 50% suffices. Below this threshold, the infection cannot propagate — each case generates fewer than one new case on average. The righteous remnant as mathematical structure.

Scripture treats sin as contagious — not merely individual moral failure but a socially propagating force. The language of disease, infection, and spread appears throughout the biblical witness.
The theology explicitly models sin as network-propagating, contact-dependent, and threshold-sensitive. "A little leaven" does not spread to all eventually at any R₀ — at R₀ < 1, it dies out. The leavening claim asserts R₀ > 1 for unaddressed sin in a community.

Jeroboam Case Study
The Biblical Paradigm of the Theological Super-Spreader
The phrase "the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin" appears 21 times in 1–2 Kings. No other individual in the biblical record is associated with causing others to sin at this frequency or persistence. Every subsequent northern king is described as continuing in his sins — a transmission chain spanning two centuries.
What made Jeroboam a super-spreader rather than merely a sinner? He did not merely sin personally — he created infrastructure for transmission:
- Set up golden calves at Dan and Bethel — alternative worship sites lowering the activation energy for idolatry (β↑)
- Appointed non-Levitical priests — bypassed the legitimate transmission-disruption system (γ↓)
- Changed the festival calendar — cultural normalization of the alternative system (β↑↑)
- Made it a state policy — institutional rather than personal transmission
Epidemiologically: Jeroboam simultaneously raised β (lowered barriers to infection by normalizing the behavior and creating physical infrastructure) and lowered γ (removed recovery mechanisms by replacing the priesthood and changing the calendar). The result was maximum R₀ — not because he was uniquely evil but because he restructured the transmission system.
The Jeroboam model predicts that the most dangerous moral actors are not the most personally sinful individuals but those who restructure institutions to maximize transmission. Laws that normalize vice, platforms that algorithmically promote outrage, cultural products that lower resistance — these are infrastructure upgrades, not individual acts. The epidemiological lens identifies them as super-spreader interventions.

The Judges cycle (sin → oppression → cry → deliverance → sin, repeated 6×) predicts epidemic oscillation — which SIR models with partial immunity produce as damped oscillations in endemic disease. The cycle's regularity is not narrative convenience; it is the expected output of a system with R₀ slightly above 1, incomplete immunity (spiritual), and stochastic reinfection.
Genesis 18:22-33: Abraham negotiates with God over Sodom, testing the herd immunity threshold. Would 50 righteous prevent destruction? 45? 30? 20? 10? This sequence is an explicit investigation of the critical threshold p_c. The negotiation ends at 10 — below which, the righteous remnant is insufficient to reach herd immunity in a city of Sodom's size. The theology independently arrives at the threshold concept.

The mapping would break if:

(3) Church discipline showed no effect on community moral contagion — if isolation of unrepentant members did not reduce spread.
All three are empirically investigable and all three run counter to available data from sociology of religion and community studies.
