The Coherence Factor (χ) measures the degree to which a civilization's subsystems—families, institutions, trust networks, moral frameworks, and information flows—remain internally consistent, mutually reinforcing, and capable of coordinated action.
χ = 1.0 means perfect alignment. χ = 0.0 means total fragmentation.
Five Years
Between 1968 and 1973, something broke.
Not gradually. Not invisibly.
Everything. All at once.
In five years, coherence dropped from 0.72 to 0.55—a 24% collapse.
More decline in five years than in the previous sixty-five.
This wasn't erosion. This was phase transition.
The Physics of Phase Transition
Water doesn't gradually become ice.
At 33°F, it's water. At 32°F, it's ice. The transition happens at a specific point, suddenly, completely.
This is called phase transition—when a system shifts from one stable state to another.
Social systems show the same pattern.
You can add pressure slowly, invisibly, for decades. The system absorbs it. Adapts. Holds.
Then one day, you add a little more pressure—and everything collapses at once.
1968-1973 was America's phase transition.

The Numbers: Every Domain Broke
| Domain | 1965 | 1973 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family (F) | 0.82 | 0.65 | −21% |
| Trust (T) | 0.55 | 0.35 | −36% |
| Safety (S) | 0.70 | 0.55 | −21% |
| Self-Control (C) | 0.75 | 0.58 | −23% |
| Mental Health (M) | 0.78 | 0.62 | −21% |
| Economic (E) | 0.72 | 0.65 | −10% |
| Civic (P) | 0.65 | 0.50 | −23% |
| Shared Meaning (Σ) | 0.70 | 0.45 | −36% |
| Intergenerational (I) | 0.80 | 0.60 | −25% |
| χ (Total) | 0.72 | 0.55 | −24% |
Every single domain declined.
Trust and Shared Meaning collapsed fastest—down 36%.
These are the load-bearing walls. When they go, everything else follows.
The Trigger Events
Assassinations (1963, 1968)
JFK. Malcolm X. MLK. RFK. Four leaders shot in five years.
This didn't just kill individuals. It killed the idea that the future could be changed through legitimate means.
Coherence impact: Trust in institutions. Faith in process. Hope for reform.
Vietnam
The government lied. Everyone knew it. The Pentagon Papers proved it.
A generation learned that their leaders would send them to die based on lies.
Coherence impact: Trust collapsed. Never fully recovered.
Watergate
The President was a criminal. The system was corrupt. The whole thing was rotten.
"I am not a crook" became a punchline.
Coherence impact: Institutional trust hit a floor it has never recovered from.
No-Fault Divorce
California 1969. Every state followed.
Marriage went from "binding covenant" to "revocable contract."
Divorce rate doubled within a decade.
Coherence impact: Family structure, the smallest coherence unit, became optional.
Sexual Revolution
Birth control pills. Available 1960. Widespread by 1968.
For the first time in human history, sex could be fully separated from reproduction.
Traditional morality—built on the assumption that sex has consequences—became optional.
Coherence impact: Shared meaning framework shattered.
Church Collapse
Mainline Protestant attendance dropped 25-40% between 1965 and 1975.
Not because people moved to other churches. Because they stopped going.
The institution that had been the primary coherence generator for three centuries... stopped generating coherence.
Coherence impact: Shared meaning, trust, civic participation, intergenerational transfer—all tied to church—all collapsed together.
Why Everything Broke At Once
The domains aren't independent. They reinforce each other.
When one breaks, it pulls on the others.
- Trust breaks → Civic participation drops → Shared meaning fragments
- Shared meaning fragments → Family structure weakens → Intergenerational transfer fails
- Family weakens → Self-control drops → Mental health declines
- Mental health declines → Trust erodes → Safety deteriorates
It's a cascade. Once it starts, it accelerates.
By 1973, the cascade was unstoppable.
The Point of No Return
χ = 0.55 was still above the critical threshold (0.35).
Recovery was still possible in 1973.
But the trajectory was set. The institutions that could have restored coherence were themselves damaged. The generation that could have rebuilt was itself fragmented.
From 1973 on, every attempt at recovery would be fighting against the current.
What People Felt
You didn't need charts to know something had changed.
The music turned dark. The movies turned cynical. The architecture turned brutal.
1965 gave us the Beatles singing "I Want to Hold Your Hand."
1969 gave us the Rolling Stones singing "Sympathy for the Devil."
1973 gave us "The Exorcist."
The culture knew. Something had died.
The question was whether anything could resurrect it.
1965: χ = 0.72
1973: χ = 0.55
Five years.
24% collapse.
Phase transition complete.
The old America was gone.
Next: Part 6 — The Cascade (1973–2024).
Fifty years of freefall.
