The Coherence Factor (χ) measures the degree to which a civilization's subsystems—families, institutions, trust networks, moral frameworks, and information flows—remain internally consistent, mutually reinforcing, and capable of coordinated action.
χ = 1.0 means perfect alignment. χ = 0.0 means total fragmentation.
The phase transition was complete by 1973.
What followed was fifty years of freefall.
χ dropped from 0.55 to 0.27.
Every decade made it worse. Every "solution" accelerated the decline.

1973–1983: The Fracturing

What happened:
- Divorce rate peaked (1980-81)
- Inflation destroyed savings
- Iran hostage crisis
- Three Mile Island, Love Canal—institutional trust collapses further
- Single-parent households double
- Cable TV fragments shared information
Key metric: Divorce rate hit 5.3 per 1,000 (1981)—highest in history.
What it felt like: Malaise. Carter's "crisis of confidence" speech. A sense that the future would be worse than the past.
1983–1993: The Substitution
χ: 0.48 → 0.43
What happened:
- Reagan "Morning in America"—economic optimism returns
- Cocaine epidemic, then crack epidemic
- AIDS crisis
- Savings & Loan collapse
- Crime peaks (1991)
- USSR falls—temporary coherence spike
Key metric: Out-of-wedlock births hit 30% (up from 5% in 1960).
What it felt like: Prosperity masking rot. Money was flowing. But families kept breaking. Crime kept rising. The inner cities burned.
The substitution: Material prosperity substituting for coherence. "Things are good" meant "I have stuff," not "my community is healthy."
1993–2003: The Virtualization
χ: 0.43 → 0.38
What happened:
- Internet goes mainstream
- Clinton scandals normalize leadership corruption
- Columbine (1999)
- 9/11—last major coherence spike
- Reality TV replaces shared culture
- First generation raised on digital screens
Key metric: "Most people can be trusted" drops below 35%.
What it felt like: Accelerating speed. Everything faster. More options. More fragmentation. The internet promised connection but delivered isolation.
The spike: 9/11 briefly pushed χ up—shared enemy, shared grief, shared purpose. By 2004, it had dissipated. The last natural coherence event failed to reverse the trend.
2003–2013: The Fragmentation
χ: 0.38 → 0.35 (THRESHOLD APPROACHED)
What happened:
- Iraq War lies revealed
- 2008 financial crisis—institutional trust collapses
- Social media begins (Facebook 2004, Twitter 2006, iPhone 2007)
- "Deaths of despair" begins exponential rise
- Religious "nones" become largest "religious" group
- Opioid epidemic begins
Key metric: Suicide rate begins steep climb after decades of stability.
What it felt like: The center cannot hold. Everyone retreating to tribes. Facts become contested. Reality fragments.
Threshold approach: By 2013, χ ≈ 0.35. Right at the edge.
2013–2024: Below Threshold
χ: 0.35 → 0.27
What happened:
- Social media becomes dominant information source
- Political polarization goes vertical
- COVID-19—trust destroyed, isolation mandated
- George Floyd—racial tension peaks
- January 6—political coherence collapses
- Mental health crisis, especially youth
- Trans ideology fragments basic shared meaning
- AI begins fragmenting information further
Key metric: Youth mental health collapses—depression up 60%+ since 2012.
What it felt like: We crossed over. Something fundamental broke. Not "feels like it's falling apart." Actually falling apart.

Why did it keep getting worse?
Because the feedback loops reversed.
In a coherent society:
- Trust builds community builds trust
- Families raise healthy kids who raise healthy families
- Shared meaning enables cooperation enables shared meaning
In an incoherent society:
- Distrust fragments community fragments trust further
- Broken families raise wounded kids who struggle to form families
- Fragmented meaning prevents cooperation fragments meaning further
Once you cross the threshold, the system accelerates its own decline.
Every attempt to fix one domain fails because the other domains undermine it.
- Try to strengthen families → but trust is gone, so commitment can't hold
- Try to rebuild trust → but shared meaning is gone, so there's no basis for trust
- Try to restore meaning → but institutions are corrupt, so no one believes them
The cascade feeds itself.

Historical precedent is clear: below χ = 0.35, no society has self-corrected.
The internal mechanisms that would restore coherence are themselves broken.
The institutions that would lead recovery have lost all trust.
The shared meaning that would enable cooperation no longer exists.
By every historical measure, we are past the point of no return.
But.
There are cases—rare, documented, measurable—where coherence was restored even after crossing threshold.
Those cases all share one pattern.
