Part 1 of 10: The Moral Decay of America
When a Nation's Coherence Goes to Zero
David Lowe • Theophysics Institute
When G is strong and S is manageable, systems cohere. They hold together. They produce order from chaos.
When S overwhelms G — or when O drops to zero and nobody is receiving the signal anymore — coherence collapses. And it collapses fast.
Stay with me here. Because I'm about to do something that will make some people uncomfortable.
I ran the equation on America.
For eighteen months, I've been building a research archive that now spans over 1,300 documents across 45 domains. The work produced a mathematical framework — the Theophysics framework — with experimental correlations at 5.7 to 6.35 sigma across three independent datasets. That's the kind of statistical confidence that gets particles named after you.
But this series isn't about the framework in the abstract. This series is about what happens when you point the equation at the United States of America between 1900 and 2025 and let the data speak.
Here's what the data says.
Peak Coherence (1940-1958)
Current State (2024)
That's not decline. That's phase transition.
The same kind of catastrophic state change that happens when water hits 100 degrees and becomes steam. Except in this case, the thing boiling away was the moral architecture of a civilization.
And the data reveals something that should stop every sociologist, historian, and theologian in their tracks: it didn't happen gradually.
Between 1968 and 1973 — five years — the following events occurred simultaneously across six independent domains:
California legalized no-fault divorce (1969). Griswold and Eisenstadt decoupled sex from marriage through contraceptive access (1965, 1972). Roe v. Wade legalized abortion nationwide (1973). The divorce rate began its vertical climb toward a peak of 5.2 per thousand.
The Vietnam War peaked and exposed. The Pentagon Papers dropped (1971). Kent State happened (1970). Watergate broke (1972). Trust in government fell from 62% to 36% in four years.
The Hays Code collapsed and was replaced by the MPAA rating system (1968). The Miller Test codified moral relativism into obscenity law (1973). Deep Throat entered mainstream theaters (1972). Playboy circulation hit 7 million, up 536% from 1965.
Christian identification began its long slide from 87% (1973) toward 45% (2023). Church attendance dropped below 40%. The APA removed homosexuality from the DSM (December 15, 1973).
"All in the Family" premiered with taboo language on broadcast TV (1971). The Controlled Substances Act formalized the drug war (1970). Profanity began its measurable migration from taboo to normal.
Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard (1971). The relationship between currency and physical reality severed. Planned obsolescence became the dominant manufacturing philosophy.
Six domains. Five years. Simultaneous collapse. That is not a coincidence. That is a phase transition.
Run the coherence equation on this data and something precise falls out.
Before 1968, the negentropic input G was high. Churches were full. Families were intact. Institutions were trusted. The cultural signal — the shared moral vocabulary — was strong. The observer function O was high. People were receiving the signal. They were oriented toward it.
The entropy S existed — it always does — but it was contained. Managed. Absorbed by the system's coherence reserves.
Then, in a window narrower than any purely sociological model predicts, G dropped and S spiked simultaneously. The churches emptied. The families fractured. The institutions lied and got caught. The cultural signal degraded into noise. And the observer function — the capacity of the population to even receive a coherent moral signal — began its long decline toward zero.
The equation says: when O · G drops below the entropy threshold, coherence doesn't decline linearly. It collapses. The system undergoes a phase transition from ordered to disordered. And once through the transition, the new disordered state becomes self-reinforcing. Entropy feeds on the wreckage of coherence.
That's exactly what the data shows.
Composite Coherence Index Over Time
The steepest drop — from 72 to 59 — happened in five years.
Over the next nine parts, I'm going to walk you through every vector of this collapse. With data. With dates. With names and numbers. Not opinion. Not nostalgia. Not the vague sense that "things used to be better."
Maps the baseline — what peak coherence actually looked like between 1900 and 1958. What we had. What it cost. And what was already fragile.
Traces the hairline cracks from 1958 to 1967. The fissures nobody noticed because the surface still looked solid.
Walks through the Great Decoupling of 1968-1973 using Bai-Perron structural break analysis. The mathematical proof that the collapse was simultaneous and synchronized — a single latent factor accounting for more than 80% of the variance across all domains.
Family (Gravity/Grace), Truth (Electromagnetism/Signal), Money (Mass-Energy/Meaning), and Identity (Observer/Quantum). Each maps the domain's variables onto the Master Equation and shows what the physics predicts — and what actually happened.
The control group. 400,000 people who rejected every variable the equation says would destroy coherence — and who are now the fastest-growing demographic in North America with an 85% retention rate, a 20-year population doubling time, and a 95% business survival rate. The experimental proof that the equation works in reverse.
The only question that matters: is there a way back? The equation says yes. But the path is narrow, and it costs everything you think you want to keep.
Structure collapse. Marriage, covenant, the base unit of coherence.
Institutional trust freefall. Government, media, church authority.
SAT scores. Attention spans. Critical thinking erosion.
Social trust implosion. The fraying of communal bonds.
Church attendance halved. Religious non-affiliation surging.
I'm a Christian. Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. That's not a footnote — it's the reason this research exists.
But this series will not ask you to believe anything on faith. Every claim is grounded in publicly available data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Gallup, Pew Research Center, the CDC, the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, the General Social Survey, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and peer-reviewed longitudinal studies.
The framework I use — Theophysics — treats physics and theology as dual projections of a single substrate: divinely ordered relational logic. The same equation governs quantum decoherence and moral decay. Not by analogy. By structural isomorphism.
If that claim survives the next nine parts — if the data holds, if the predictions land, if the control group confirms what the equation demands — then we're not looking at a metaphor.
We're looking at the signature of the God who wrote the laws of physics and morality with the same hand.
Let's begin.
