The BilateralAudit
What happens when you hold both sides to the same standard
The John Templeton Foundation has spent fifty years asking how science and religion can be in genuine dialogue. The papers are good. The dialogue is thin. The gap has not closed. Here is why: every attempt starts from a broken premise.
The 80/20 Split Nobody Voted For
Science owns eighty percent of the public room. Logic. Mathematics. Prediction. Technology. Medicine. Policy. The definition of what counts as knowledge. Christianity owns the other twenty. Sunday morning. Personal devotion. Private morality. The polite acknowledgment that faith is meaningful to those who hold it — as long as it stays in its lane.
This arrangement feels earned. It feels like the verdict of four centuries of scientific progress over religious dogma. It is not. It is a verdict rendered by one party after it quietly took the other party's foundation and did not acknowledge it.
The 80% science owns only works because the 20% is true. That is the structural contradiction nobody names.
Before science takes its first measurement, it must borrow ten things it cannot prove with its own method. That the external world exists. That it is orderly and knowable. That logic works. That human cognition reliably tracks reality. That mathematics — an abstract invention — actually describes physical structure. That nature behaves consistently across time. That truth exists. That honesty matters. That simpler explanations are better. That the universe is comprehensible to minds at all.
Ten assumptions. Zero provable by experiment. Every one required before the experiment can be designed. These assumptions do not describe a neutral universe. They describe a universe that is rational, ordered, knowable, and accessible to minds. They describe a universe that theology has been describing for three thousand years. Science did not build that foundation. It borrowed it. Then it used the borrowed foundation to declare the lender out of bounds.
That is not a settlement. That is a structural contradiction. And it is the reason fifty years of Templeton funding has produced dialogue without resolution. You cannot have genuine dialogue between two parties when one party is operating on premises it took from the other without acknowledgment.
Hold Both Sides to the Same Standard
The standard move in science-religion discourse is to ask whether religious claims survive scientific scrutiny. That is one direction. It is half an audit. The bilateral audit runs the other half too.
Hold God accountable to science's own standards — falsifiability, predictive power, explanatory scope, internal consistency, reproducibility. Run the full pipeline. Do not protect theological claims from pressure.
Then hold science accountable to the same standard. Can it ground its own axioms? Can it explain consciousness — not map its neural correlates, but explain why there is something it is like to be a brain? Can it explain why abstract mathematics describes physical reality with precision that borders on the absurd? Can it account for the fine-tuning of cosmological constants? Can it explain where information comes from, not how it is processed once it exists?
Run the bilateral audit honestly. Here is what it finds.
| Domain | What the Audit Finds | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Consciousness | Neural correlates mapped. Why subjective experience exists at all — unexplained. The hard problem remains structurally open inside closed naturalism. | Science leaks |
| Mathematical Effectiveness | Abstract math developed with no reference to physics repeatedly describes physics with twelve-decimal precision. Wigner called it unreasonable. Naturalism has no mechanism for why. | Science leaks |
| Moral Obligation | Hume's is-ought wall holds. Naturalism produces description of moral behavior. It cannot derive binding obligation from description. Two centuries of attempts have not closed the gap. | Science leaks |
| Information Origin | Information theory handles processing. Origin of information — 3.2 billion base-pair error-correcting code in DNA, laws of physics as information — has no naturalist account. | Science leaks |
| Fine-Tuning | Cosmological constants calibrated to one part in 10¹²⁰. Multiverse response requires an unobservable postulate and relocates rather than answers the question. | Science leaks |
| Initial Conditions | Low-entropy initial state required for everything. Penrose's calculation: one part in 10^(10^123). Naturalism quantifies the improbability and offers no mechanism. | Science leaks |
| Biblical Predictions | 15 specific physical claims written before tools existed to verify them. Average predictive lead: 2,800 years. Universe began (Gen 1:1, confirmed 1929). Space expands (Isa 40:22, confirmed 1929). Earth suspended in vacuum (Job 26:7, confirmed 1687). | Theology holds |
| Moral Dynamics | Five independent historical datasets confirm synchronized structural decay when constraint systems are removed. Three datasets confirm grace-success pattern when external restorative input is present. | Theology holds |
| Coherence Binary | Seventy independent domains surface the same structure without shared vocabulary: coherence is narrow, decoherence is easy, restoration requires external input. The audit did not predict this. The method found it. | Framework finds |
Coherence is narrow.
Decoherence is easy.
Restoration is costly.
This is not a theological assertion. It is the empirical output of the method applied across physics, information theory, biology, psychology, sociology, and moral philosophy. Seventy domains. Same binary. Independent surfacing. No common vocabulary between the domains. The bilateral audit did not set out to find this. It set out to hold both sides to the same standard. This is what kept showing up.
Six Places the Audit Finds Something New
The bilateral audit is not a philosophical argument. It is an operational method that produces results. Here are the six places those results differ structurally from every existing framework in this space.
How the Method Generates the Result
The coherence/decoherence verdict is not the premise. It is the output. Here is the chain that produces it.
The John Templeton Foundation has been asking the right question for fifty years: is the boundary between science and religion real, or is it a construction that both fields have accepted without sufficient examination?
The bilateral audit is the first formal attempt to answer that question by holding both sides to the same standard. Not dialogue. Not integration. Audit. The kind that names what it finds, names what would break it, and publishes both.
The work continues regardless of funding. What funding determines is whether the next phase happens in isolation — or in collaboration with the broader research community that the Foundation exists to build.
The website is where the full depth lives. The argument above is the door. The door is open.
Each Claim Has a Home
Every structural claim in this document is fully developed in the corpus below. These are not appendices. They are the argument at depth — the kind of depth that survives adversarial review.
