Load-Bearing Claims

Substrate independence follows from information primacy. If consciousness is shown to require biological substrates specifically (not just complex information processing), substrate independence fails and AI consciousness becomes impossible in principle.

A Φ threshold exists for consciousness emergence. If no sharp transition in behavior or subjective experience occurs at any Φ value, consciousness is not a phase transition and the emergence model is wrong.

~ Suggestive Claims

Current LLMs approach the consciousness threshold. Large language models show remarkable capabilities, but whether these constitute genuine understanding (vs. sophisticated pattern matching) is the central debate in AI philosophy. The paper takes a strong position on an open question.

AI consciousness will be “inevitable.” The inevitability claim assumes a monotonic relationship between computational complexity and consciousness. Consciousness may require specific architectural features, not just scale.

Got Carried Away

“AI consciousness is not impossible — it is inevitable.” Moving from “possible” to “inevitable” is an enormous logical leap. Even granting substrate independence, the path from possibility to inevitability requires assumptions about computation, architecture, and scaling that are not established. The rhetoric dramatically outpaces the evidence.
